Judge Dredd: The Complete Brian Bolland (IDW)

Rating: 3.5 / 5 – Good book when bought for the right reasons

I was a bit disappointed with this book and that had a lot to do with what I was expecting to get compared to what I actually got.  This is a really nice oversized HC with a price tag of $49.99 and I was really expecting a full-color interior.

These are classic Dredd stories but the description of the book on Amazon didn’t denote that it’s primarily in B&W (though there are a few color pages in the pinups/covers section in the back).   Turns out the originals from 2000AD were B&W, while I was familiar with the Eagle reprints in the US (which were in color), thus my mis-set expectation.  Very crisp reproduction of the B&W art, though.

That said, I’d recommend the book be purchased primarily as a method to examine Bolland’s exquisite artwork.  You don’t necessarily get complete stories here since Bolland didn’t illustrate every chapter of Dredd epics like The Cursed Earth (we get chapters 5,9,10,21,22) and the Day the Law Died (we get chapters 6,7,10,13,14).
