Rating: 4.5/5 – A Fresh New Take on an Established Character.

Never in a million light years would I have thought I would enjoy a Cyclops solo book. But here I am, two issues in, really digging this title. After setting the narrative up, issue #1 ended with the promise of galactic adventure. With issue #2, writer Greg Rucka delivers. Young Cyclops, ripped from the past, romps around the universe with dear old (presumably dead) dad, Corsair. It’s an X-Men book essentially turned into a Marvel cosmic book, and so far, one of my favorites.

The issue starts out with a montage of the many places that Cyclops and Corsair visit on their new adventure. It’s fun, especially since I’ve always enjoyed the cosmic part of the Marvel Universe. But make no mistake, this book is as much about a father and son rediscovering their lost relationship as it is about their galactic antics and Rucka handles it masterfully. And for those wondering how Corsair is suddenly alive? Well, this book begins to drop hints as to how he was resurrected. At one point, even a cohort questions him about it. Meanwhile, Cyclops appears to really be enjoying himself and for a second I think he stopped lamenting his lost love, Jean Grey. This fresh, young outlook by Cyclops as he experiences life and the universe (again, from our viewpoint) is communicated perfectly by the art of Russell Dauterman, which is lively, fun, and bright.

This book is many things–the story of a father and son, a fresh new take on an established character, and hopefully some answers to looming questions–all wrapped up in a whole lot of fun! It’s a multifaceted book that I think can pull together different readers for different reasons. Personally, I think it’s a touching treatise about lost opportunities and the chance to make amends for past regrets. Greg Rucka is one of the best and he’s managed to take a character that isn’t necessarily my favorite and make it a must read.
