Half Past Danger #1 (IDW)

HalfPast1
Rating: 4/5 – Dinosaurs & Nazis in the Pacific in WWII??  What’s not to like!

I must admit to having a soft spot for US Marines vs. dinosaurs on islands in the Pacific Theater during WWII.  This goes back to the old DC War comics like The War That Time Forgot in Star Spangled War Stories.  Combine that with a Nazi base on the same island and you’ve got a double threat for our intrepid heroes.

But it doesn’t stop there, without giving the whole book away, there is a twist about 2/3rds of the way through that switches things up from being just soldiers vs. dinosaurs.  This is a good thing, but also slowed the pace of the book down for the finish.  The fight scene near the end  seemed a bit forced and didn’t have a lot of impact after the balls-to-the-wall action in the first act.  That said, writer/artist Stephen Mooney sets us up for what should be a fairly significant payoff in issue #2.

I’ll definitely be back, hopefully the action will pick up & we’ll get spies, ninja, more dinosaurs, nazis, and all kinds of crazy action.
