Rating: 4/5- A nice introduction to the new Ms. Marvel.
by ComicSpectrum reviewer Gilad Levin.
The introduction of the new character was done well and Kamala, the new Ms. Marvel, is a likable character. The fact that she’s a nerdy, superhero-loving person makes her that much more relatable. G. Willow Wilson’s story is a fun and entertaining read. It’s cheesy, but in a good way. That said, adding the layer of religion/cultural heritage on top of Kamala’s basically endearing core personality was a noble effort at diversity in comics, but I felt it was a bit forced and it didn’t add to the story for me. That said, since the attempt at adding diversity was only a rather small portion of the book, the book worked as a whole.
The art in the book is a spectacle. It’s full of color and depth. The artwork works perfectly for the tone set by the book and offers a great look into the range that Adrian Alphona and Ian Herring are capable of.
The title is a key part of Marvel’s new MarvelNOW push and it works. It gets you interested in the characters and the introduction to them is done nicely. Despite a small feel of a clichéd “teenage struggle” story, I highly recommend it and can’t wait for the next issue.
