It’s getting close to the end for not only Green Lantern: New Guardians, but for a large number of DC titles before the big Convergence event concurrent with DC’s office move from New York to Los Angeles. In New Guardians number thirty-eight, I got the sense that this series is coming down to its final few issues especially from the title, “It All Ends Here”. After a wonderful opening that has its ties to the end of the Godhead event, we begin to see some resolution in the relationship between Kyle Rayner and Carol Ferris.

Justin Jordan has had a nice handle on the character of Kyle Rayner since he took the writing over close to twenty issues ago. As Kyle and Carol discuss their relationship, both characters address their concerns and the effects being a Lantern has had upon them. It’s a touching scene that I would have liked to have seen get more time, but the action and the pacing ramps up rapidly till the end. Overall this issue was a quick, but enjoyable read with some really nice art by Diogenes Neves.

Neves is more than a capable artist for a title like New Guardians. The opening scene involves a city size monster and he’s able to effectively portray the scale. Then he goes right into four pages of mostly dialogue and he’s able to frame the sequence in a way that isn’t dull or simple. At times his faces and facial expressions can look a little off, but they’re still good enough to show the emotions. As always, color plays such an important part in the look of the Green Lantern family of titles and although Kyle and Carol’s costumes look a bit too plain at times, the mix of brights and darks throughout this issue work together well.

I’ll be sad to see this title come to an end as I’ve enjoyed this series and Justin Jordan’s writing of Kyle and Carol. Although reading Godhead may be a bit of required reading to understand just where the monster in this issue came from, you’ll still be able to enjoy this opening chapter in what will be New Guardian’s final story. There’s three issues left and I’m hoping that this series can go out with a bang!
