The Other Dead #1 (IDW)

OtherDead1

Rating: 2.5/5 – Zombies are not just human any more…

This puts a twist on the standard Zombie story where zombies are always humans and animals are generally unaffected by whatever virus or mystical force causes the dead to walk the earth lusting for human flesh.  Here it’s the animals that get the walking/trotting/flying dead treatment.

It’s a good concept and the highlight of this issue is the art by Qing Ping Mui, a newcomer that I’ve not seen before and will be keeping my eye out for in future.  The problem I had with this issue is the same of many #1s, too much setup before getting to some of the core action promised by the high concept of the series.  I’d have liked to see more animal zombies doing their thing.  The splash page with the zombie ducks was cool, but even there we don’t get to see them actually doing anything.

After this issue and all the character setups I’m hoping the introductions are over and I’m holding out hope that future issues will pick up the pace and we’ll get into the action.
