Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #1 (Marvel)

MK Spider-Man1

Rating: 4.5/5 – This guy named Peter Parker used to be Spider-Man…

I really loved this “tale from the past” where Matt Kindt brings back Peter Parker, it was nice to see him back in the Spidey suit.  Given the appearance of Madame Web & references to Peter’s freelance photography for the Bugle days, this is definitely an untold tale.

Marco Rudy’s art is fabulous.  I think he has a style that you’re either going to love or hate, and I fall into the “love” category.  The design sense he brings to the page reminds me of JH Williams III when he first hit my radar in a big way doing Batwoman with Rucka.

This story is titled 99 Problems and Peter is going to have to face & overcome all 99 or perish in the attempt.  Are they real?  In his mind?  In a simulated environment?  We can’t be sure at this point, but buckle in and enjoy the ride as we are brought on a psychedelic tour of bad guys and amazing page designs with very interesting wordplay built into the designs/layout.
This is certainly not your typical Spider-Man story, it seems built from the ground up to stand out from the rest of the Marvel comics on the racks.  If this is to be the hallmark of the Marvel Knights relaunch, I’m looking forward to what we’re going to see next.
