Rating: 4.5/5 – The thrill of finding new stories like this is why I love reading comics!

Thanks to my fabulous Local Comic Shop (Comics Toons’n’Toys in Tustin, CA) I was able to see this comic on the rack, browse through it, realize it looked pretty cool, buy it, take it home, and ultimately read it.  This is the advantage of a great LCS and the vital role they play in our hobby.  They help expose readers to a wide variety of material they’d never otherwise see.  Heck, I pore over Previews each month and I missed this comic.

Bold Riley is Princess Rilavashana and has set out to find adventure in the lands beyond her home of Prakkalore. In this story she comes across a fragment of bone that shares a tale of lost love (the bone talks, just roll with it, OK?) Riley sets out to reunite the lost spirit in the bone with its beloved, and this is the thrust of our tale. What really pulled me in was the timeless nature of Leia Weathington’s story.  The themes of love, longing, and searching for one’s place in the world are universal to the human condition.  The art by Jonathon Dalton is simple but appealing.  It perfectly illustrates the story being told and has a charm that is completely evocative of the story’s setting.  Utterly charming.

More importantly, I discovered that this comic is a mere sampling of a much richer set of Bold Riley stories available in a 232 page trade paperback illustrated by a host of wonderful artists.  You can even download a free 67 page sample and give this book a “try before you buy”, and I’d heartily recommend giving it that free try.  The thrill of finding new stories like this one is why I love reading comics.  The joy of sharing the comics I find with others is why I run the ComicSpectrum web-site!
