Rating: 5/5 – A Visual Sugar Rush! My New Addiction.
by ComicSpectrum EiC Bob Bretall
Sure, you might crave sugar, but not like aliens do. To them it’s so addictive that Earth is quarantined. Zero verbal, physical, or commerce related contact with non-humans allowed because sugar is so in demand it’s a lucrative substance for smugglers…as long as you don’t get caught.
The husband-and-wife team of Miss Lasko-Gross (writer) and Kevin Colden (artist) have created a gem of a series here. Lasko-Gross’ dialogue is witty and highly entertaining, Colden’s art is beautiful. Colden’s facial expressions and body language are worth the price of admission by themselves, even if they were not coupled with the sharp storytelling of Lasko-Gross. The story focuses on 2 shuttle pilots; Scout (female) and Bachmaan (male) transporting a ‘cargo’ of seven settlers and 5 convicts in cryogenic suspension, assisted by parolee and penal colony liaison Nelly Hodgeson. Bachmaan is in league with some smugglers, Scout is just hilarious, and Nelly is the smartest one on the ship You’ve got to read this book to fully appreciate it, I could cite numerous passages of dialogue or describe panels that I absolutely loved, but my descriptions won’t do the writing and art justice.
I don’t know how many comic shops are carrying Z2 comics The Sweetness #1, but I’m sure it’s a number less than 100% and that is a shame. Even those that carry it may have only gotten a few copies so many new readers won’t stumble across this hidden gem. Trust me, ask your local shop to place a reorder for this book if they don’t have a copy available. Give it a try. Or bypass your shop if they don’t have it and grab a digital copy, those are never sold out and there is no comic shop owner’s lack of ordering standing in between you and your comic reading. This is the best new series I’ve read in months. The Sweetness is on my pull list and I look forward to the remainder of the series, beyond that I now have two new creators to keep an eye out for.
